  3. QuickDNS Lite is a caching-only Internet Domain Name Server that runs on Macintosh computers.

  8. QuickDNS Lite is available now for $49, see "http://www.menandmice.is/" for further information. QuickDNS Pro will be available late 1995 for $290.

  11. Requirements

  13. QuickDNS Lite requires System 7 or later, that the server Macintosh has a connection to the global Internet, and that MacTCP is correctly set up. QuickDNS Lite should run on any Mac model, from the Macintosh Plus upwards, and is accelerated for Power Macintosh.

  16. Installation and Setup

  18. 1. Server

  20. Installation on the Mac you plan to use as a name server is easy.  First you need to make sure that MacTCP is correctly installed and working on the computer you plan to use as a server.  After installation of MacTCP has been verified, copy the QuickDNS Lite application to the server and double-click on it to open it. That╒s all there is to it, you now have a caching-only name server up and running!
  21. If you wish to have QuickDNS Lite automatically open each time the server Mac is rebooted, just create an alias of the QuickDNS Lite application and drag it to the folder ╥Startup Items╙ inside the System Folder.

You may also want the server Mac to use itself as name server.  This is entirely feasible, and could even prove to be a big win for busy mail, ftp, www or other servers. In this case you also need to set the server up as a client as per the instructions below, just note that the server IP number and the client IP number will be the same.

  27. To set up a client Mac to use QuickDNS Lite as server follow these steps:

  29. First note the IP number of the server. To do this, open the MacTCP control panel on the server and note the number that appears in the field indicated in this picture:

  50. Close the MacTCP control panel on the server.

  52. Open the MacTCP control panel on the client Macintosh and click the ╥More╔╙ button.  The following dialog box will appear. (Note: The illustration shows only the relevant part of the dialog box.)

Note that in this example the server Macintosh has an IP number of 192.168.1.1.  The client Mac has the IP number 192.168.1.2 and is on a domain ╥mycomp.com╙. If you would like to set MacTCP up to use another name server for backup, enter the necessary information in the Domain Name Server Information list, as illustrated below (here the backup server has IP number 192.168.2.1).

  85. Close the MacTCP control panel, restart the Macintosh and the setup is complete.

  90. QuickDNS Lite is a commercial product.  You are allowed to try QuickDNS Lite for 14 days, after which you are required to register your copy or stop using it.  
  91. For further information on how to register, see our web server at "http://www.menandmice.is/" or contact Men & Mice using any of the methods listed below (see the section "How to contact us").

When your order has been processed you will receive a serial number and an activation code.  To register your copy of QuickDNS Lite, select the "Register╔" menu item from the File menu.  A registration dialog will appear - enter your name, company name, serial number and activation code and click the "Register" button.

  115. Free memory:  Total amount of free memory. To increase the size of the server's cache just increase its memory allocation in the Finder. When free memory drops below 40K, the server will start purging cache entries (see below).

  117. Packets in:  Total number of UDP/TCP messages received.

  119. Packets out:  Total number of UDP/TCP messages sent.

  121. Requests in:  Number of requests received from clients.
  122.  
  123. Requests out:  Number of messages sent to other name servers.

  125. Replies in:  Replies received from other name servers.

  127. Replies out:  Replies sent to clients.

  129. Replies from cache:  Self-explanatory.

  131. Entries in cache:  Total number of domain names currently in cache.

  133. Entries purged:  Number of cache entries purged since server startup.  If you see this number increasing rapidly it may be an indication that you should increase the memory allocation for the server.

  135. Records in cache:  Total number of resource records in cache.

  137. Records purged:  Number of resource records purged or replaced since server startup.

  140. Why use a caching-only name server?
  141.  
  142. There are mainly three reasons why anyone would choose to use a caching-only name server.

  144. 1. Robustness
  145.  
  146. If you set your Internet hosts up to use more than one name server, your network will not cease working unless all your name servers go down at the same time.
  147.  
  148. 2. Performance
  149.  
  150. Having a local caching-only name server can be a benefit if the name server you currently use:
  151.  Ñ is overloaded with work.
  152.  Ñ is on the other side of a slow or congested network connection.
  153.  Ñ does not provide recursive service.

  155. 3. Bandwidth savings
  156.  
  157. In an environment where you pay for bandwidth used, having a local caching-only name server will save you money by locally resolving the great majority of DNS requests.

  160. Known problems and incompatibilities
  161.  
  162. QuickDNS Lite is apparently not compatible with OptiMem.  We are investigating the issue, but for now we recommend that you disable OptiMem for QuickDNS Lite (QuickDNS Lite does not benefit from OptiMem in any case, because it allocates all its memory at program startup).

  164. One user has reported crashes when running QuickDNS Lite under MachTen MacTCP emulation.
